What sets one vase apart from another

The mouth decides the arrangement; the finish decides what it goes with:

• Single stem. A narrow mouth that holds one stem upright on its own — the simplest arrangement and the hardest to get wrong.
• Wide mouth. It takes an open arrangement and volume; it asks for more flowers and more upkeep.
• Silver plating. A cool reflection that suits white china and a pale cloth.
• Gold plating. It warms the table and works better at night, with candles.
• 18/10 stainless steel. The alloy that does not stain with standing water or with frequent use.
• In threes. Three different heights along a long table settle the centre without blocking conversation.
