What sets one centrepiece apart from another

The design decides whether it stands alone or holds something:

• Open-work and lattice. The open design lets the cloth show and lightens the weight of the piece in the middle of the table.
• Closed. A continuous surface, which works as a tray and takes fruit, bread or a candle.
• Silver plating. A cool reflection that flatters white china and a pale cloth.
• Gold plating. It warms the table and performs at night, with candles nearby.
• Round or oval. Round for a round or square table; oval follows a long one better.
• Stainless steel. It does not stain with fruit or water, and it goes to the wash without ceremony.
